Foot washing

In John’s Gospel, at the last supper, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, a task usually reserved for a slave.  He gave his disciples a new commandment (mandatum, from which we get our word Maundy), to love and serve one another as he had loved and served them.  As part of our celebration of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday, we invite members of the congregation to take part in washing one another’s feet.
