After the celebration of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday, the altar and the church are stripped of ornamentation, to give a sense of the desolation of Jesus’ betrayal and arrest. Extra bread and wine consecrated to be used at the Good Friday liturgy and reserved on the altar of repose, and a vigil begins that last through the night. Members of the congregation are encouraged to sign up for half-hour shifts praying before the elements on the altar of repose. The building is occupied all night. The watch ends at 9:00 on Friday morning.
